Scope and Contents

The Chatham University Student Newspapers Collection includes issues of the student newspaper produced between 1895 and 2018. Most issues were published during the academic year between the months of September and June of each year. The newspapers were produced by students of Chatham University (formerly Chatham College, Pennsylvania College for Women, and The Pennsylvania Female College). Topics presented in the collection relate to current events, campus activities and events, updates from members of the alumni community, campus sports, arts and theatre, and topics chosen by the student staff of the newspaper. Photographs, illustrations, and drawings appear throughout. The collection charts changes to views on women's education, careers of women, and lives of women over time and reflects changes to role of women in american society. Topics of local, regional, national, and international scope are presented.

Biographical or Historical Information

First published in 1895, the Chatham University student newspaper is published by the students of the university at regular intervals during the academic year to inform and entertain members of the university community. Designated members of the faculty served as advisors to the otherwise entirely student-run publication. The title of the newspaper has been The Sorosis (1895 - 1921), The Arrow (1921 - 1970), The Matrix (1970 - 1982), The Rolling Pebble (1983-1984), First Edition (1984-1988), The Communique (1988- 2018). Literary content appears in the newspapers primarily before 1929, when a separate literary magazine, titled Minor Bird, was founded.
