Scope and Contents

Martha J. Crandall’s scrapbook provides in depth coverage of her time at the Pennsylvania College for Women (P.C.W.) from 1913 – 1917. The scrapbook begins with the address of classmates and photographs of classmates, the school, and professors. The scrapbook includes invitations, dance cards, flyers, notes, streamers from parties, and news clippings. The materials are arranged in chronological order with some marginalia. The scrapbook includes event programs, with full commencement programs and other pamphlets from class events.

Biographical or Historical Information

Martha Johnson Crandall attended the Pennsylvania College for Women (P.C.W.) starting in 1913 and graduating in 1917. During her time at PCW, Crandall was Class Secretary, Class Reporter, and Editor –in- Chief of the Sorosis. She was also part of House Student Government Board, the Student Government Board, Glee Club, Omega Club, Drama Club, and the Young Women’s Christian Association. After her time at P.C.W., Martha Crandall began a teaching position in Warren, PA. In 1920, she became engaged with Mr. Charles Noyes and the two married in 1922. The two adopted a baby girl and named her Martha Helen. Martha went on to the Carnegie Institute of Technology’s School of Fine Arts for Music. Martha and Charles also had a son Jim, who would later enlist in the Navy. Martha Crandall Noyes remained in contact with the P.C.W. Alumni Association and attended many class reunions. Mrs. Crandall-Noyes passed away on October 23 rd , 1981.
